Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the effects of reed(Phyagmites communis) root extract(RRE) extracted with 80% ethanol on oxygen radicals and their scavenger enzymes of learning and memory impairments SAMP8(female). Senescence-accelerated mouse(SAM)P8 were fed basic diets(control group) and experimental diets(RRE group) with 250§·/§¸ BW of RRE for 8 months. Grading scores of senescence in RRE group remarkably inhibited about 55% compared with control group. Formations of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals in RRE group were significantly inhibited about 25%, respectively, but hydrogen peroxide formations in RRE group showed almost no changes compared with control group. Lipid peroxide(LPO) levels in brain mitochondrial fraction were significantly inhibited 15% by long-term administration of RRE. Administrations of RRE slightly decreased in LPO levels of brain microsomal fraction, but no significant differences in administered groups of RRE compared with control group. Mn-superoxide dismutase(Mn-SOD) activity of brain mitochondrial and microsomal fractions in RRE group were remarkably increased about 50% and 30%, respectively, by long-term administration of RRE. These results suggest that the damages of brain cells in learning and memory impairments of SAMP8 may be effectively inhibited by long-term administration of reed root extract(RRE).
